---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Mdonald721@aol.com Bill, Don McDougall / ,class of 1952 Response: Don, Thanks for the good words, and for the e-mail. I checked out the class of 1952 bios and we need your bio and a recent picture. It would be greatly appreciated. Click here for: Bio rules. Bill O. From: ROGER WILSON Response: Roger, My research shows the following: The alternating factor is that not all grads were there on picture day, or gradurated in mid-year, and some never gradurated at all, but still consider that as their year. The 569 figure for 1957 includes eight such classmates. Bill Odekirk / class of 1954 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Verna, From: Norma Weaver Hi Bill, Dave emailed me -- long story short I ended up talking to Verna this morning. Good luck with your backpack adventure. Backpacking was one of our favorite sports when we lived in Federal Way. Five days in the Olympic Mountains, numerous trips in the Cascades -- one I will never forget to Skunk Lake!!!! Know you will have a great time -- even at 72!!! Looking forward to seeing you again and have bookmarked the website. Norma Weaver From: Hartmann Bill, you backpacking trip sounds like great fun. Looks to be about a 10 mile hike. Watch out for the tides and killer waves! Dave Response: Dave; It's an eighteen mile hike but the problem is that you have to take three days because you have got to wait for low tides to get around some of the cliffs. Six miles a day should be easy even with a thirty five pound pack. Lots of time for beach combing and picture taking. You are probably right, it is close to ten miles on the beach, but you have to hike into the beach and back out at the other end. .............................. AND have you ever tried to walk ten miles in the sand. I'll let you know. Bill O. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Norma Weaver Bill Have had a major revision to my life, Max moved to his final destination December 10th. So I feel like an Israelite wandering around here in the deserts of Arizona. But that is not the reason for this message. Flew to Seattle the end of June. Sat next to a stewardess (Julia) who was deadheading back to Seattle. Late into the flight, we struck up a conversation. She said "my sister graduated from Highline -- think it was 1954. Her name was Verna Robinson." Told her about the reunion in 2004 and the yearly get togethers -- when I got to my daughters looked at the website and noticed she was among the missing. Is she still among the missing? I have not contacted Julia because I want to give her the latest and greatest information about what is going on. Anxious to hear from you, Norma (Hettle) Weaver Response: From: Bill Odekirk Norma, How very good it was to hear from you. So sorry to hear of Max, however you are in good hands, a good spirit was with the Israelites, hang in there. I am also sending this email to Jack Hoffman and Dave Hartmann, they are the ones that keep track of our classmates. I am pretty certain that she is still missing, they will be able to tell us. Personal note: At seventy two years old I am taking my first back packing hike this coming weekend. Three days up the pacific coast, starting at the Hoe River and ending at Third Beach. I'm going with my daughter, her husband and two grandson's. I'll let you know if I survive. Oscar Roland Bill, thanks to Jack, I've confirmed that it was our Virginia who wrote the beautiful poem I recently came across on the Internet. It would be nice if you posted it. As stated at the end of the poem, Virginia died fm complications of diabetes in a nursing home in Walla Walla on 20 JAN 2001. She had been in the home for several years. Her husband, Floyd, visited Virginia every day but one night he was killed by a drunk driver while he was on his way to see her. Virginia's sister, Leora (class of 1955), confirmed the info above. Leora lives in Moses Lake. Dave As Requested: I'm Having the Time of My Life
I'm having the time of my like right now. For I never thought I'd ever be given a second chance, such as The Lord has given me, To see with clearer eyes than I have ever seen before. And I am strong within His strength, and precious in His sight, I'm having the time of my life right now. Because I've learned to share everything with GOD, each minute I am here. This poem was written by Virginia Arlene Batts Murphy, shortly before her husband was murdered by a drunk driver in 1999. She passed away from the complications of diabetes on Jan 20th, 2001. Trick or treating in a Pirate costume A ten year old dressed in a pirates costume went trick or treating, -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: John L Kastien Dear All, I got a call from Bill Bliss last night. He had received a call from Pat Wells, Gary's widow. She is trying to find where Gary was working shortly after high school. While Bill may have contacted some of you I thought I would put out an "APB" to see if any of you knew or maybe knew of someone that could help find his place of employment in 1954-55. Any help would be deeply appreciated by Pat and Bill. Please pass this on to anyone that you think may have even an idea. Unfortunately I lost track of Gary the day he walked out of Highline. Gary came by our place in Burien once for a brief visit one evening and then rode off into the night again. Thanks, Jack Response: If you have information on Gary Wells, please e-mail Jack Kastien. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: John Hoffman Bill Sallylee located Bill Bernhardt and I am including his contact information for you below. I have been getting emails about sending my bio to Highline Foundation for Excellence -- for an alumni directory. Is this something that is excepted by our Highline Alumni? Is it a real request? Their email is GLD-gcr@harrisconnect.com -- it is from New York. I hope you can give me information on this. Hope you are having a great spring -- it is supposed to snow this weekend -- but green and flower are still blooming. I am spending time with an old friend from the late 80's (at that time we were in our almost 50's and now have reconnected in our almost 70's -- fun) Hope you can help me with this -- am looking forward to more alumni get-togethers -- Happy Day, Sheila Response: Sheila, It is good to hear from you again. I am very glad you brought the subject of the "Harris Book" to my attention. I have received numerous phone calls on the legitimacy of this book. This what I know about it: #1. It is not connected officially to this web sight or the Highline Alumni Foundation, . As for Alumni get-together's you are in luck, one is coming up at the Highline High School Cafeteria on Saturday, May 17th, AND THIS IS A FUN ONE, and it only cost $25.00 including lunch! Sorry about the miss spelling, it has been corrected. As for the 55th dinner I have no information, however Dick Dahlgard is putting forth a great effort to get as many of the class of 1954, our class, to the upcoming, :All Class Reunion and Gabfest" on May 17th at dear old Highline. Bill Odekirk / Class of 1954 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Judy Corcoran Dear Bill, Judy Adams Corcoran Class of 1957 Response: Judy, Thank you for the good words, your request has been completed. Thank you for pointing it out. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mr. Odekirk, We received a letter from the Highline alumni and would like to pass on some sad news. Our father Raymond Saunders passed away on August 17,2007. We would like him added to the Highline Obit page please. Below is his obituary. Raymond Saunders Thank you, Rebecca Saunders --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
After rereading the e-mail below, it dawned on me that it was a typo, that Bob Skubovius should have graduated in or around 1960, and sure enough I found him in1961. Deceased from the class of 1961 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Paul Allen Bill, First, I somehow got on the list as a Highline graduate (1970), even though I graduated from East High in Bremerton in 1971. You can save the alumni association a few pennies a year by removing me from the list. Here's how the most recent mailing was addressed: Paul Allen 1970 Second, while searching for an email address to send this note to, I found your www.highlinealumni.com web site and its obituary page. I didn't see any mention of Bob Skubovius' passing. I'm pretty sure he graduated from Highline, so I figured you'd want to know. He would have been about 10 years ahead of me, so probably class of 1970, plus or minus. His sister Karen (Cline) called me several years ago to tell me he was gone. As far as I know, Karen and husband Ron Cline still live in the Highline area. You can probably get more specifics from her. Thanks, Paul Allen Response: Paul, I don't know who the class rep is for the class of 1970 but if anyone does she is the one to take Paul's name off the list. As for Bob Skubovius, I searched every class from '65 to '75 and found nothing. If anyone out there has information about him please forward it to me. In advance, Thanks. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: John Hoffman (class of 1954) Hi Bill I got a number of kick backs from the alumni membership drive from Dick . One was Deceased Wayne Dalsing that I did not know about. Another was for Barbara Huss Cahill who we show as living in Kent . Could you call her at 253-631-9009 and see if she has moved or goes south for the winter? People search would indicate she is still in Kent . PS You are looking GOOD Thanks, Jack RESPONSE: Jack, Thanks for the compliment, I feel better than I look. I called Barbara's number number and it has been disconnected. I will see what I can do with more research. IF ANYBODY OUT THERE KNOWS THE STATUS OF BARBARA (HUSS) CAHILL (class of 1954) , PLEASE LET US KNOW!!. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- which picture is current the "Linebacker" or the "Trackman"??? Dave - (Hartmman, class of 1954) RESPONSE: Dave, I am proud to say that the 'fat old, frumpy, man' is the thing of the past. I do almost feel like a track man again, and best of all I have gotten off of three different medicines I had to take. Since May 1st, of '07 I have averaged walking over seven miles a day, and on one day in late January I walked over sixteen miles. I finally found an exercise I enjoy. Maybe it is a hang over from walking seven miles one way to my first loves house when I was fifteen?? Oh for the good old days. Obituary ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Obituary ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Obituary ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thanks for the article, Vonnie. I read it while enjoying my morning cup of Kaffee and Krumekucken. Your reference to lefse reminded me of the '51 State Basketball Tournament when we played Ballard. Highline was the underdog and Ballard was getting the best of us during the first half of play. Throughout that half and during most of the second half the Ballard fans kept yelling the same cheer: "Lutafisk, lutafisk, lefse, lefse, we'll beat Highline, ya sure ya betcha!!". Man, it got old and on our nerves. However, the game turned around during the last few minutes of play and we WON!!! Our entire fan section could not contain themselves as we, much louder than Ballard ever had, belted out: "Lutafisk, lutafisk, lefse, lefse, we BEAT BALLARD, YA SURE, YA BETCHA!!!!!". Oh, how sweet it was!!! Dave ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Norwegian memories Ya sure, ya betcha we have a Thanksgiving tradition. Our tradition starts the day after Thanksgiving, when the whole family gathers together to roll and bake lefse and make krumkake. What are lefse and krumkake, you ask? Scandinavian yummies. Bless my mom's heart; she spent many hours showing her grandsons how to make Norwegian cookies and pastries. Little did she know they would carry on the tradition to this day.
As you can see from the photo, we start our little ones rolling as soon as they can stand up to the table. So thanks, Mom, for enriching our lives. For instilling in us the importance of family. For giving us one "special" day a year to share our love and talents. Vonnie Gooch , Auburn Gene G. I. (9-12-07) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Obituary From The Seattle Times (9-9-07) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Karen Beeson As usual lately, I forgot to do this right away and then totally forgot until I saw the AARP Magazine report on somebody's 55th reunion. I thought ours was terrific -- as usual Howard, Sherri and Richard did a great job. The location was good, the price was right, it was fun to see everybody (the only drawback being that the space was a little cramped for the number of us who were there and I have a feeling when I see the video there will have been some I missed). As for future reunions, I like the 5 year schedule we've been using. Maybe after the 60th it would be wise to shrink the schedule but for now I think 5 is good. Informal and fairly inexpensive works for me. My dad, L.E. “Bid” Fitchett, graduated from Highline in 1934.He died on September 30 1995 from respiratory failure. He was a long time Burien resident(1928-1995). At Highline, he met Ruth MacCarroll, who was a member of the class of 1935. They where married in 1938 and enjoyed a 30 year marriage. Mom died on March 3, 1990 from a stroke. Please feel free to email me (leefitchett@comcast.net) or to call me:206 999 6578 to verify any of this information! Comment: I called Lee because I wanted to be sure I understood his message. What he is saying is that both his mother, Ruth MacCarroll (class of '35) and his father L. E. "Bid" Fitcheet (class of 1934) went to Highline and have passed away.
